Fat injections involve extracting fat from one place in a patient’s body (abdomen, thighs, buttocks or elsewhere) and re-injecting it elsewhere on the body.
Very often this procedure is used to fill in sunken cheeks or laugh lines that form between the nose and the mouth, to correct various skin depressions and indentations, to minimize forehead wrinkles, or to make lips fuller and more sensuous.
After both the donor and recipient areas are cleansed and treated with local anesthetic, the fat is withdrawn using a syringe attached to a suction device. The extracted fat is then prepared and injected into the recipient area.
Many patients are able to resume normal activity immediately. There may be some swelling, bruising, and redness in both the donor and recipient areas.
