Blepharoplasty surgery, also known as an eyelid lift, is a procedure performed to correct any issues in the eyelid, such as puffy or droopy eyelids. As people grow older, their skin loses tone and elasticity. This causes the muscles around the eyelids to become weak and the eyelids to begin to stretch. Due to this, the areas around the eyelids will start gathering excess fat, which in turn causes them to sag, become puffy, and develop bags.
These changes can make a person appear tired all the time as well as add years to their look. When the skin around the eyes begins to sag, it can cause vision problems, especially affecting the peripheral vision. Blepharoplasty helps eliminate and reduce these problems and also improves your appearance, making you look younger and more alert.
Why You May Need Blepharoplasty
Excess skin or fat in the eyelids can cause several problems, such as an aged appearance, heaviness in the eyelids, puffiness, and even obscured vision. The best solution to these problems is the removal of excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids.
Blepharoplasty is the best option for people who have any of the following:
• Sagging loose skin that could result in folds and creases, disrupting the eye’s natural contours
• Fatty deposits under the eyelids that cause puffiness and bags below the eyes
• Excess skin that forms fine lines and wrinkles
• Drooping eyelids that expose the whites of the eyes or impair vision
Blepharoplasty can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures to improve the overall facial appearance. To find out more about combination procedures, speak with your plastic surgeon.
How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?
Eyelid surgery can be performed on both sets of eyelids in one sitting. During this surgical procedure, local anesthesia is carefully injected around the patient’s eyes to numb the region to pain.
Next, the surgeon will make very small incisions in the eyelids. If surgery is required on the lower eyelids, the incision is often made inside the eyelid and excess skin and fat is removed through here. This incision is well hidden and not visible. Another option is on the lash line on the outside of the lid. Upper-eyelid incisions are made on the natural crease on the outside of the lid.
Through these incisions, the surgeon will remove any excess skin or fat. If necessary, the underlying muscle tissue will also be tightened. The incisions are then closed with small stitches.
What You Can Expect After Undergoing Blepharoplasty
Most people who undergo blepharoplasty are satisfied with the results of the procedure. The surgery helps them look more rested and alert. It gives them a more youthful appearance and can help with self-confidence. Even more importantly, it helps eliminate any vision problems caused by sagging or drooping eyelids, improving patients’ frontal and peripheral vision.
