What is a Facelift?

A facelift is designed to rejuvenate a youthful appearance by tightening the underlying facial muscles and removing excess skin and fat and smoothing wrinkles, creases and lines. A facelift should look very natural, not pulled or tight. The procedure will improve and correct several areas of your face and neck, leaving you looking years younger than your age.

What is the Average Cost for a Facelift?

When considering a facelift, it isn’t just about cost. The skills of your surgeon have everything to do with the beauty of your results. Skilled hands and expertise will ensure that your new look will be beautiful and appear refreshed and natural. With Dr. Lyos, your facelift procedure is customized to address your unique needs, and the cost can vary. Typically, a facelift procedure costs in the range of $12,175. Dr. Lyos will meet with you to discuss the surgery and any associated costs so you can plan accordingly.

Mini Vs. Full

Which facelift is right for you?

Depending on your age and the signs of aging you're having addressed, you will either undergo a mini or full facelift with Dr. Lyos. Here's what you need to know:

Mini

The mini facelift involves small incisions along the hairline and a relatively quick recovery period. The procedure exclusively targets sagging skin, wrinkles, and unwanted fat along the jaw, lower cheeks and neck. As such, it's ideal for younger Houston patients who want to address the earliest signs of facial aging.

Full

For older patients who want a comprehensive transformation, there is no substitute for a traditional, full facelift. Through a lengthy incision, Dr. Lyos can address sagging cheeks, deep eye creases, prominent mouth lines, heavy jowls and more. Because this procedure is more intensive than the mini, it is typically reserved for patients in their 50s and 60s.

Surgical Technique: The secret to a well-done lift

There are several facelift surgical techniques, but they are not all created equal. Some require a greater degree of skill and some are known for producing subpar results. Being informed will help you make smart decisions not only about your procedure – but about the surgeon you select as well.

Endoscopic

Through tiny incisions, a microscopic camera (endoscope) and tiny surgical instruments are used to restore a youthful appearance. This approach is ideal for patients who want to address sagging muscles and fat, but don't need to remove a large amount of excess skin.

SMAS

SMAS is the new gold-standard technique for facelifts. It involves tightening and lifting the underlying facial structure to enhance your contours, before trimming away excess skin. This approach is relied upon for producing organic results that last.

Cutaneous

This technique is outdated and should be avoided. It involves creating a large incision and lifting and suturing the skin to a higher location. Because the underlying facial structure remains untouched, the results are not as natural or long-lasting when compared to alternative approaches.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Your facelift procedure will be done under general anesthesia in the comfort and safety of our state-of-the-art surgical center. You will be asleep throughout the procedure, so you won't feel any pain or discomfort as Dr. Lyos creates your incisions and elevate, firms and smooths your skin.

When you awaken from surgery, your face will be wrapped in bandages to protect the area. We will then move you to the recovery room, where you will be closely monitored by our nursing staff and anesthesiologist. Dr. Lyos will have you transferred to 1 of our overnight care suites, where you will have one on one care for your first night. Your family will be notified once you are settled in and they can join you.

Recovery After a Facelift in Houston

Recovery from a rhytidectomy procedure is usually more comfortable than you might expect. After your procedure, you will be able to return home under the care of a friend or family member. It is essential to sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated. Within a day or two, Dr. Lyos will remove the dressings. You can expect some swelling and bruising, which is normal and not a cause for concern. Around day five, your first set of stitches will be removed, with others removed at around day ten. Your body will need to rest and heal, so plan to take two weeks off from work or any commitments you may have. After that time, you should feel back to your usual self and ready to show off your rejuvenated look!

Life after your lift

While this procedure is much like turning back a clock, even the best facelift in Houston can't stop the aging process. As such, Dr. Lyos recommends preserving your results with a healthy skincare regimen moving forward. He and his staff will compose a custom treatment plan just for you, and it will likely involve a combination of at-home care and in-office, non-surgical maintenance

Revision Facelift

A revision facelift is a second surgery done to correct some part of a previous facelift surgery. This may be necessary or desired due to poor surgical work the first time around, or because the patient disliked some aspect of their final results. In either case, a revision facelift is commonly done by a new surgeon and involves additional complexity since the skin and muscle will already have been manipulated. As a triple board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Lyos is a frequent choice for patients who desire revision facelift surgery.

Facelift — Frequently Asked Questions

What other procedures can be combined with a facelift?

Facelifts address the lower half of the face and are thus frequently combined with nose reshaping surgery (rhinoplasty), eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), and/or a brow lift to produce a more comprehensive improvement in a patient’s overall facial physique and complexion. In many cases, a few of these can be combined and done in one surgical session, thus reducing recovery time and the number of times one needs to go under anesthesia.

What is the average age to get a facelift?

More people have facelifts between the ages of 55 and 65 than at any other age. The second most common age for the facelift procedure is between the ages of 40 and 54. Facelifts at a younger age are extremely rare, with only 2% of all facelifts performed being done on patients younger than 39. While there is no “perfect age” for a facelift, the best time for one is usually when one’s face has lost significant volume in the midface and has gained considerable volume in the lower face, with jowls, and sagging skin tissue that affects the contour, youthfulness, and beauty of the face.

Is a Facelift Painful?

Having a facelift performed by our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Lyos, will be painless, as it is performed under general anesthesia. To manage the discomfort and pain following surgery you will have a prescription for pain medication, but soon you will only require over the counter pain medication. Your recovery will be monitored with follow-up appointments to ensure all is proceeding as it should.

Will There be Scars?

There will be surgical scars but they are hidden from sight within the hairline or around the creases of the ears, so they are invisible once you have fully healed. The care with which the procedure is performed, along with suturing technique are critical factors in ensuring you are free from visible scars. Dr. Lyos, our board-certified plastic surgeon is known for his excellent surgical techniques and for achieving very natural looking results – not an unnatural, pulled look. You want to look like yourself – just younger and more attractive. That’s what you can achieve under the care of Dr. Lyos in Houston.

Are the Results of a Facelift for a Lifetime?

The results of a facelift last for many years but will not stop the natural aging process. When your facelift is performed by our experienced, triple board-certified surgeon, Dr. Lyos, you can expect the results of your expertly performed facelift to last for many years, based upon your skin quality and age. If your face once again begins to sag or droop, another procedure can be performed, but this will be years in the future, particularly if you care for your skin correctly. A full facelift typically has results that last ten to fifteen years, and a mini-facelift (addressing mid-face region) will last up to five years.

How do I Prepare for a Facelift?

The first step is a consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Lyos. He will review your medical history and conduct a physical examination of your skin and tissue. You will undergo testing to ensure you are safe to undergo surgery. You may need to adjust medications or dietary supplements. Blood thinning products such as aspirin or anti-inflammatories, and some herbal products that thin the blood must be avoided. All preparatory actions will be discussed in detail in your consultation. Prior to your surgical appointment, follow medication directions, wash your face and hair, arrange for help during recovery, and avoid eating anything after midnight. You are still able to drink water.

Can I Get the Same Results with a Non-Surgical Facelift?

A non-surgical facelift cannot produce the results of a surgical facelift. A surgical facelift repairs sagging facial muscles, removes excess skin, repositions tissues, and is a full facial rejuvenation. A non-surgical facelift will smooth lines and wrinkles, add volume to cheeks for a lifting effect, but cannot remove excess sagging facial skin or lift sagging jowls.

How long will my facelift last?

To ensure your facelift is long-lasting, you must care for your skin. A good daily moisturizer with a broad spectrum UVB sunscreen will help protect your skin from future sun damage. For most patients, a facelift will last in the range of ten to fifteen years.

When Should I Expect to See Results?

You should expect to see some results immediately, but your face will initially be swollen. Don’t worry – as the swelling and bruising subsides, typically around two to three weeks after surgery, your new look is revealed. After about two weeks, the swelling and bruising is greatly diminished, allowing you to return to your work and normal social activities. The results will continue to improve for up to about one year, although only you will be likely to notice these final subtle changes.
