Breast Augmentation - Houston & The Woodlands, TX

Flat, drooping and deflated breasts can cause your self-confidence to plummet. When this occurs, Dr. Lyos' excellent results performing breast augmentation in Houston can restore lost volume and reclaim the youthful figure of his patients.

What is a Breast Augmentation?

A beast augmentation can increase fullness in the breasts, therefore create a more attractive figure. A breast augmentation procedure can involve either placement of breast implants or through a fat transfer from another body area. While this breast procedure will make the breasts larger or fuller, it will not correct sagging or drooping.

A breast lift, also called a mastopexy, can be performed in conjunction with a breast augmentation to give you the full, rounded and lifted breasts that appear natural and youthful. You can consult Dr. Lyos to determine if a breast lift is necessary.

Breast Augmentation Patient Review

Dr. Lyos did an amazing job on my breast augmentation. It took me years to get over my fear and finally have the procedure done. After my second child I went for multiple consultations with other plastic surgeons and decided to go with Dr. Lyos. His professionalism and thoroughness is like no other. I was barely an "A" cup and feared I would look unnatural if I had the surgery. He listened to my needs and I am currently a natural looking "C". I couldn't be happier with the results.

The procedure can range in price from $5,000 to $6,000 and up. Silicone implants also cost an additional $1,200.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Augmentation?

  • Sculpt proportionate breasts
  • Balance asymmetrical breasts
  • Restore volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss
  • Improve your confidence + body image
  • Create a more feminine appearance
  • Rediscover your youthful shape

Who is a Candidate for Breast Implants?

Any healthy patient 18 or older is eligible for saline implants. However, to receive silicone implants, the FDA has deemed patients 22 or older are eligible. Breast implants may be the right choice if you:

  • Have drooping or deflated breasts
  • Feel that your breasts are too small for your figure
  • Are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are close to your ideal body weight

Your breast implant incision options

To achieve the best results in breast augmentation, you'll need to choose the right incision. The technique used will have a large impact on your final results, scars, and recovery period. Here's what you need to know:

Areolar

This incision is created along the bottom edge of the areola. The scar blends in completely, so it's a discreet option that's very popular among our Houston clients.

Inframammary

This approach involves an incision along the fold of the breast. It's a very common and effective technique, particularly for placing silicone breast implants.

Transaxillary

A transaxillary incision is hidden in the armpit. Through that opening, an empty saline implant can be inserted. Once in place, it will be filled to its desired size.

The results of your breast augmentation will depend heavily on the implants you choose

There are countless breast implant types, sizes, and projections available, and the right choices for you will depend on a variety of factors - from your body type to your desired outcome to your lifestyle and clothing preferences.

Your ultimate guide to breast implants

What is the best breast implant? The truth is, there isn't one. There is only the best breast implant for you. On this page, we've outlined everything you need to know about your options, so that you can make an informed decision.

Composed of silicone gel, these implants are FDA-approved for women at least 22 years of age. In addition, they can be used for reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy. They are very popular among our Houston clients because silicone tends to feel the most like natural breast tissue.

The Benefits

  • Soft silicone feels the most like natural breasts
  • Implant rippling is less likely with this option

The Drawbacks

  • Silicone implants require a longer incision than saline
  • Implant leaks and ruptures are more difficult to detect
  • Regular follow-up appointments are required to ensure that your implants are in optimal condition

Gummy bear implants are composed of a thicker and firmer silicone gel. A newer option, these implants are rapidly growing in popularity among our Houston patients.

The Benefits

  • Lower risk of complications, including implant rupture, rippling and capsular contracture
  • Available in round and teardrop shapes

The Drawbacks

  • A slightly firmer feel than traditional silicone
  • They require a longer incision and are more challenging to place
  • There's a slight risk that they will rotate within the breast pocket
  • They are more expensive than other options

Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater. They are often empty when they are inserted, and then filled to a predetermined size once placed in the chest. In recent years, they have become less popular than silicone and gummy bear options.

The Benefits

  • The volume is adjustable once the implants have been placed
  • They are more affordable than silicone and gummy bear implants
  • A smaller incision can be used to place the implants
  • They offer maximum projection and volume
  • Implant rupture is easy to detect

The Drawbacks

  • A slightly firmer feel than silicone implants
  • An increased rate of implant rupture and rippling
  • An increased risk of “bottoming out,” due to a heavier weight

How to choose the right implant for you

The best way to choose the most ideal breast implants in Houston is through a private consultation with Dr. Lyos. During that meeting, he will talk to you about your body type, lifestyle, clothing preferences and desired outcome to determine which implant will deliver the results you need.

How do I determine the best implant style and size for me?

Everyone’s needs will be different when it comes to breast implants. Don’t get hung up on being a certain bra size and instead be open to what looks best on you. Dr. Lyos will help you decide on implants that are the right size and shape for your body. If your breasts are appropriately proportioned and enhance your other features, then bra size is irrelevant.

You should also aim for a size that will allow clothing to fit properly. Too large or too small and you may have a hard time finding clothing that fits correctly.

The style of implant you choose will also be determined by your desired outcome, the look and feel of your breasts, and more. Each type of implant has a unique look and feel. Dr. Lyos may even have you try on sizers to see a representation of what your breasts will look like after surgery. Saline and silicone implants are both approved by FDA and are completely safe, even in the event of a rupture.

Are Structured Saline Implants the best option?

Structured saline implants involve relatively new technology that lets them act as a hybrid between silicone and saline styles. While still filled with saline, they contain an internal structure that provides stability and a natural feel.

Benefits of Structured Saline Implants

Silicone implants are structured enough that they retrain their shape in the event of a rupture, also known as a “silent rupture.” Meanwhile saline implants will deflate significantly and the saline solution will be absorbed by the body. Structured saline is the best of both worlds: They retain some of their shape during a rupture but you will be aware that a rupture has occurred so it can be amended.

The internal structure of the implant also decreases the chances of a rupture happening in the first place. The shell provides support and feels more natural, similar to silicone implants.

How are the implants placed?

There are two primary methods for placing breast implants: submuscular and subglandular. The subglandular placement involves positioning the implant underneath the breast tissue but above the pectoral muscle. Submuscular placement involves placing the implant underneath your pectoral muscle. There is not necessarily one technique that is better than the other, and Dr. Lyos will help you determine which one is best for your individual procedure.

Combining Your Augmentation with a Breast Lift

Your breasts can begin to sag or lose volume after pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or other hormonal changes. While a breast augmentation increases the size of your breasts, it cannot restore them to a higher position. If you’re interested in altering the positioning or projection of your breasts, a breast lift can be combined with your augmentation for optimum results.

During a breast lift, a “keyhole” style incision is typically made around the nipple and down to the breast crease. Excess tissue and skin are removed and then the incision is closed, lifting the breast to a higher position. When combined with an augmentation, the implant can be placed above or below the muscle as discussed with Dr. Lyos before the incision is closed.

When combined with a breast lift, you may require a larger incision than an augmentation alone. The longer incision can impact your recovery. Dr. Lyos will discuss all options with you and customize your breast augmentation to fit your individual body and cosmetic goals.

The procedure: What to expect

Your breast augmentation, performed by Dr. Lyos, should take one to two hours to complete and will be done under general anesthesia. The procedure will be performed in the comfort of our state-of-the-art Houston, TX surgical center.

To begin, Dr. Lyos will create the incision discussed during your initial consultation - either along the bottom of the breast, in the armpit, or on the edge of the areola. Through the chosen opening, he will place your breast implants and carefully close the incision with sutures.

When you awaken from surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in a gauze bandage. You will then be fitted for a surgical bra that will support the area as you heal.

After Surgery

If you want the best breast augmentation results, you'll need to choose the right incision. The technique used will have a large impact on your final results, scars, and recovery period. Here's what you need to know:

Have a friend or family member stay with you. Even under the best circumstances, recovery from breast augmentation is challenging - especially during the first few days. Dr. Lyos recommends having a trusted friend or family member care for you during the healing process.

Get plenty of rest. Take it easy for several days after your Houston breast augmentation surgery and avoid heavy lifting, straining and bending.

Take off from work. If you have a sedentary job, you may be cleared to return within one week. However, expect more time off if your job is physically demanding.

Breast implant exercises: Prevent complications + ensure a natural outcome

Approximately 3 to 4 weeks after your breast augmentation, Dr. Lyos will instruct you to begin breast implant exercises. Doing so will ensure a natural outcome while preventing the development of capsular contracture - a serious complication that requires a second surgery to fix.

Dr. Lyos will provide you with detailed instructions during your post-operative appointments, but here is a general overview of breast implant exercises:

Cup your breast with your opposite hand and push the breast implant upward and toward the chest wall. Hold in this position for one minute.

Place your fingers on the upper portion of your chest and push straight down toward your ribs.

Cup your outer breast with your opposite hand and move the implant inward.

Initially, you will need to do these exercises once a day. After about three months, you can reduce the frequency to once a week.

Breast Augmentation — Frequently Asked Questions

Should I Wait Until I'm Finished Having Children Before Having Breast Augmentation?

You do not have to wait until you are finished having children to have a breast augmentation, but you should not plan on becoming pregnant within twelve months following your procedure. Your body will need time to heal from the surgery before going through the many physical changes of pregnancy.

If you are planning on having children in the near future, then it is best to wait to have breast augmentation surgery. Once you have finished having children and completed breastfeeding, an augmentation can be performed to restore your breasts to a pre-baby condition. Dr. Lyos is an acclaimed, triple board-certified plastic surgeon who is known for excellence in this procedure.

Is Breast Augmentation Painful?

Your breast augmentation will be performed under general anesthesia, so you will not experience any pain during the procedure. After the treatment you will have prescribed painkillers to reduce any discomfort over the early stages of healing. Most patients report that the recovery was easier than expected.

How Long is the Treatment?

Breast augmentation performed by Dr. Lyos at our accredited Houston plastic surgery clinic will be under general anesthesia, so you will not experience any pain during the procedure. After the treatment you will have prescribed painkillers to reduce any discomfort over the early stages of healing. Most patients report that the recovery was easier than expected.

Will I be Able to Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation?

While breast augmentation in Houston alone does not typically compromise your ability to breastfeed, if you have any concerns it is advised that you wait until after you have completed breastfeeding. Breast augmentation, depending upon the technique, should not interfere with the nipple or milk ducts but poses some degree of risk. You will have to wait at least three months after completing breastfeeding before undergoing breast augmentation.

If you are considering a breast lift in combination with breast augmentation then the likelihood for complications with future breastfeeding increases, especially if the nipple and areola need to be repositioned, as there is a higher risk of affecting milk ducts. You can discuss these concerns with our board-certified surgeon in planning your procedure. Dr. Lyos will inform you of the potential risks associated with combining a breast lift and augmentation and the best procedure if you plan on breastfeeding children in the future. In some cases, it is better to wait until you are done having children.

How Long is the Surgery?

If the surgery is breast augmentation and no added procedure, then it should take approximately one to two hours. The length of the surgery will depend upon the incision sites and type of breast implants placed. Saline implants require smaller incisions, as they are filled after placement, but silicone implants are more popular, as they more accurately mimic natural breast tissue in feel, weight, and bounce.

Will Breast Augmentation Increase the Risk of Breast Cancer?

Research reveals that breast augmentation does not increase your risk of developing breast cancer. Your self-exams should be thorough, and mammograms performed regularly. Inform your doctor that you have implants, so your mammogram is performed correctly.

Do I Need to Replace My Breast Implants in the Future?

It is not necessary to replace your breast implants at any set date, but modern breast implants come with a ten-year warranty. Many last far longer than the ten-year mark. The only time it is necessary to replace breast implants would be due to a rupture or you have developed complications such as capsular contracture or rippling. Most women replace implants when they feel they would like to change breast size. It is advised that you undergo a scan periodically if you have older implants.
